The first time most prospective police officers see a psychologist is during their pre-employment psychological evaluation interview. By that time, the candidate had already passed through most of the steps in this lengthy hiring process — the written examthe oral board interviewthe background investigation, agility test, medical examination, and even a polygraph which is required by some agencies.
Usually 2 out of applicants make it so far. The candidate may go to a psychological screening either before or after a conditional offer for employment. They will be hired only upon the approval of the psychologist. In this sense, the psychological evaluation interview can make or break your dream of becoming a police officer. Therefore, we have prepared this short guide about what does the psychological screening include and how you should behave in order to pass it successfully.
It is not a check of your overall sanity or lack thereof. So, what is the psychological screening for? It is to determine that you can handle the stress associated with working in the field of law enforcement. It is to show that you have the mental strength to handle abusive language, violence, horrifying crime scenes, long hours of work.
Even one single day of the police officer can be physically, emotionally and mentally overloaded and the psych evaluation aims to assess your ability to handle this burden. All in all, there are certain traits desirable for police offers and certain traits that are unwanted in law enforcement. It can be summed up that the aim of the psychological screening is to determine the candidates who are responsible, mature and stable for work in law enforcement.
The overall procedure of the pre-employment psychological screening varies between the agencies but it usually includes three components:. Make sure to answer all the questions honestly. Be advised that many of these tests have built-in measures for detecting inconsistency and exaggeration.
In other words, you should expect to come across the same question several times, though under different wording. You should know that the pre-employment psychological screening may be carried out for several candidates at the same time. How to Pass the Police Psychological Test
Therefore, you should expect to meet several people waiting to be evaluated when you arrive at the place of the screening. As a starter you will receive an initial questionnaire about your personal history that will include questions concerning your personal strengths and weaknesses, education, employment history, background information, including past drug use.
The initial survey is followed by several multiple-choice personality assessments, where you will need to express your attitude to given statements by marking whether you strongly agree, agree, are neutral, disagree or strongly disagree with it.
Do not be surprised that the personality assessment phase contains the same or similar questions that appear several times throughout the questionnaire. This is done on purpose and gives the psychologist the possibility to evaluate your integrity, honesty and consistency.
If you attempt to lie on any of the questions, you will surely fail to give the same lie on the following similar questions and ultimately fail your evaluation. Do not try to deceive the evaluator since their job is to detect such attempts. The last element of the screening is the face-to-face interview with a psychologist, who will most probably ask you some of the questions that you have already answered in your self-evaluation.
This gives you a chance to clarify some of your answers or to explain some of your beliefs. In most of the cases, the clinical interview with the psychologist is the most unpleasant part for all candidates.
They feel as if they are being interrogated for a crime they have not committed, which is actually not the case. Approach the evaluation interview with the idea of having a conversation about your life and preferences in general, rather than going to a cross-examination. The overall feeling about the psychological evaluation interview should be similar to any other job interview. You should expect the psychologist to ask you different questions about your background, current lifestyle, previous work experience, education.
The evaluator will definitely enquire about any problems or symptoms of fatigue, depression, obsessions that you may experience. By all means, you will also be asked what are your expectations about the job you are applying for. Law enforcement officers should show high ethical standard and therefore there are several personal qualities that are critical if you pursue career in this field. There are currently users online. How to pass your police pre-employment psych screening without going nuts
Got a letter stating that my interview was "unacceptable" for certification as a police officer. Funny thing is that I just did my psych and interview at the same place in March for a different PD and passed with flying colors.
My question is has anyone ever had any experience with this and can this decision be appealed? Tags: None. Doubtful anything will change. You can always contact the person involved with hiring and explain you passed for another PD. Comment Post Cancel. Those are flawed like the poly. A buddy of mine tried to go back home to Cali with his Fam.

I recently took a psych test for a local sheriff's department and got the call stating that I didn't pass.
A recent spike in unsuccessful Psych Interviews
The Captain said that the test said that I didn't have enough experience and also that I showed some traits that the test considered not good. He wouldn't go into detail on anything else. I'm not sure of the exact test that I took but the test was about questions long and the first part was timed and asked questions about the next number in the sequence and spelling and stuff like that and the other part was a normal psych where it asked, do you love your mom, and things like that.
What I'm wondering is first how can the test say I failed when its just a piece of paper and a computer judging it, I never talked to anyone. Second is am I just better off getting out of law enforcement all together because I'm just going to fail these tests.
Thanks for reading sorry its so long. Tags: None.A formal Psychological Exam will be conducted as an oral interview with a trained specialist or psychologist.

And just found out that I am being disqualified I was offered the job by the Chief on Wednesday pending I passed the psych eval and physical. For police recruits, the psychological evaluation process represents one of the last hurdles to getting hired. The process can feel intimidating, since it requires filling out an extensive personality questionnaire, and discussing the results during an interview with a police psychologist.
Instead of stressing out over the process, smart recruits focus on answering all the questions as honestly -- and completely -- as possible. This approach pays bigger dividends than trying to manipulate the answers, which only hurts your chances. Generally speaking, applicants who make a point of understanding the process fare better than those who don't.
Both steps are simply meant to help police departments assess your suitability for a particular opening. An adverse result doesn't mean that you have a psychological problem, or can't work for a different agency. All too often, recruits don't realize that the screening process is intended to highlight patterns from which the examiner draws certain inferences. For example, a series of inconsistent or contradictory answers might indicate an inability to understand the test, or a bid to manipulate the results, police psychologist Dr.
Laurence Miller says. Similarly, an applicant who polishes too many of his answers will probably eliminate himself from consideration. Police agencies expect applicants to show appropriate motivations for pursuing law-enforcement careers, which also reveal themselves through the screening process, according to a white paper written by Sgt.
Automatic deal-breakers include voicing a desire for power and excitement, or showing an unwillingness to work in a structured environment. Too many neutral responses, on the other hand, might indicate a passive or risk-averse personality, which a department also isn't interested in hiring.
As you complete the personality test, you'll probably come across questions that don't seem to make much sense. Your own hunches will probably work best, but speak up if you don't understand something. The same rule goes for the interview, Miller notes, where you're expected to discuss your background, lifestyle and work history. The nature of the process will likely prevent an examiner from answering too many questions, but if that's the case, he won't have a problem telling you.
A little preparation goes a long way during the screening process. Make sure that you've eaten properly, and are well-rested.
Also, don't be afraid to ask if you can appeal negative results. In most cases, the answer is cut-and-dried; a candidate either passes, or fails. However, results can be skewed by interpretation errors, as departments typically hire examiners on a low-bid, contract basis, Miller notes. If you feel unfairly excluded, follow the appropriate steps to assert your rights.

Other Considerations A little preparation goes a long way during the screening process. Accessed 14 April Heibutzki, Ralph.Basically the reason why I am spending 5 wonderful points on this is because I did my oral psych today and I left the place numb. I honestly don't know what to think! I was honest, answered everything the way she wanted me to answer, and didn't hold anything back but when I walked out of the door, I didn't know how to feel!
I didn't know if I should start laughing or crying! My question is, how did you feel after your psych? Do you think feeling like this is just normal considering it is the last test to pass before you go into the police academy? You might have your own opinion, I won't judge you for that, but don't you even dare to try and change my mind because every single word i read of your speech How old are you again?
I'm 21 and I apparently have my ideas a lot more clear than yours. Did you have a planned career when you were my age? I don't even think you'd remember that. All I have to say is, there is good cops and bad cops, I will make my pick, you don't have to do that for me. Exhausted is how I felt. The 3 or 4 personality surveys that were each questions was enough to make anyone nuts! The Psychiatrist was a strange bird - i almost thought I should of been sitting and him laying down!!
Eehhh, they psych is awful for dispatchers. I'm sure much worse for officers. Whats up with that? The oral interviews are the worst though. All you can think of is "they must think I am retarded" I have worked for 2 agencies.
