She received criticism in February over navy recruitment adverts which used slogans written in English. Moving from perceptions to statistics, illegals constitute 20—30 percent of all immigrants in Italy but represent 80 percent of those arrested for serious crimes Italian Ministry of Interior, The higher criminal propensity of illegals, however, may reflect differences between legal and illegal residents, as opposed to the causal effect of legal status.

In particular, illegal immigrants are typically young, single, male, and less educated than legal immigrants Cohn and Passel, ; Mastrobuoni and Pinotti, ; and Caponi and Plesca, More generally, the two groups could differ along other dimensions relevant to criminal behavior. It is thus difficult to identify the causal effect of legal status on crime committed by immigrants.

The institutional framework in Italy, however, allows estimation of the causal impact of legal status on criminal behavior. Most important, the exact timing of the cutoff was unknown ex ante, as it depended on the timing of all applications and on how many were rejected for being inaccurate, false, or incomplete. This means comparison of these two groups tells us about the impact of legal status per se. My empirical results suggest that legal status significantly reduces the number of serious crimes committed by immigrants in Italy, from 2.

These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence regarding the effect of immigration on crime. Earlier work by Butcher and Piehl shows no evidence that immigration affected crime across U. Borjas et al. For other countries, Bianchi et al. Finally, Bell et al. This last result suggests that average estimates across geographical areas may mask significant heterogeneity in the criminality of different immigrant groups.

Indeed, the propensity to commit crimes should differ across immigrants depending on individual characteristics, such as age, gender, and education, in the same manner as for natives.

However, immigrants differ among themselves with respect to another important factor: legal status. Baker shows that legalization reduced crime across counties.

At the same time, the IRCA enforced stronger control over hiring illegal immigrants, creating obstacles to employment for those not legalized. Freedman et al. For other countries, Mastrobuoni and Pinotti exploit variation in legal status among pardoned prison inmates in Italy after the EU expansion of January These results can inform the current debate on immigration policy.

My research suggests that the effect of such restrictions will depend crucially on the effective degree of enforcement. If enforcement is low, implying that substantial numbers of illegal immigrants enter the country, then the ultimate effect of the policy is to exclude these immigrants from the official labor market and thus raise the risk that they become involved in criminal activity.

We live in an age where more and more people have become dependent on packaged contexts — many of us have stopped thinking and analysing. Instead, we wait for that analyst or that social media influencer to tell us X is good and Y is bad.

These are the people without a vision or the ability or the desire to excel. We became content with the middle. We no longer want to disturb the sweeping conformism. No storming of the Bastille. No mutiny on the Aurora. Instead, the mediocre have seized power without firing a single shot.

Populists thrive on the inability of some to make their own independent opinions. They target the mediocre because they are easy to win over. Their buttons are easy to press. Natives are faced with the danger of overwhelming immigration. Religious extremists are threatened by secularists and liberals. There is no depth in his sentences.

It worked for him well in He counts on the mediocres to carry him again to the White House in November. Needless to say one of the biggest Italian TV networks, Mediasat, is infamous for its provocative reality programmes. In the Arab world, the situation can get even worse.

It might not be reality TV oriented but surely similar in outcome. The rise of Daesh and Al Qaida is squarely populist. They were told over and over again that their religion was under threat. Most investigations into the recruitment methods of these terror networks found out that most recruits were either school dropouts or with low education.

Mediocracy again. And it keeps getting worse. Historians argue that the rise of superficiality began in the s which coincided with the rise of the Right in the US and UK, with the elections of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. Oliver Stones did a great job in chronicling this period in his classic film, Wall Street.

In the Arab world, we are not far from this shift. I think the impact has been even bigger in this region. We were hit by two vicious currents: the ultra-religious movement and the postmodern movement this one was unfortunately not a natural evolution of modernity, in which we did not enter at all by that time, but was more of a jump into the void.

These two currents were not interested in building on the prevailing societal values but sought to completely break with those foundations. The roles of a sensible leader, the intellectual and the creative artist were replaced by religious extremists and petty artists.

Consumerism, dependent on imports, replaced national manufacturing — especially in traditional manufacturing states such as Egypt and Lebanon. The imports culture extended beyond consumer goods and food. We imported pre-packaged culture too. Now influencers have the power to define the social standards and draw the boundaries of our culture. We know what he's capable of. Worse off at the weights with Corinthia Knight but two lengths better off at the Breeders' Cup and has the stronger form. David Moyes' side did really well at the Etihad but ultimately came away with nothing. But weirdly, this team doesn't seem to handle encouraging signs very well. Two teams who have adjusted well to the top flight but the next few weeks will be crucial. They both rank in the bottom 3 for total shots taken and shots on target.

Basel won the reverse fixture 5-0 and will progress with a win over pointless Benfica. Has a good strike-rate at this level and second from poor draw last time over course and distance.
